The ALZTEC OFFCUT RECYCLING SYSTEM is a highly efficient solution for recovering and reusing valuable silicon from ingot and wafer production. The system processes all common types of silicon offcuts, including wings, tops & tails, ingot pieces, and bricks, helping manufacturers improve material utilization and reduce production costs.
With a scalable capacity ranging from 5 GW to 20 GW, every recycling plant is individually engineered to fit the customer’s production environment. Automated material handling and intelligent process control maximize silicon recovery while minimizing labor requirements, resulting in higher productivity, increased sustainability, and significant annual cost savings.
The Silicon Offcut Recycling Process
The silicon recycling process begins with manual or robotic loading of silicon offcuts into etching baskets. An integrated pre-cleaning system removes sawing slurry using rotating brushes and high-pressure water jets, preparing the material for the subsequent chemical treatment.
The silicon is then etched with an optimized HF/HNO₃ acid mixture, removing approximately 30 μm from the surface and eliminating metallic contamination. Surface metal concentrations can be reduced to around 100 parts per trillion (ppt), providing the ultra-clean silicon required for manufacturing high-efficiency solar cells and modules. Nitric exhaust gases are safely treated in an integrated scrubber, while ALZTEC also offers complete chemical supply systems. As an alternative, an alkaline etching process with reduced utility costs is available.
After cleaning, a robot feeds the material into the ALZTEC jaw crusher. Corrugated tungsten carbide jaws ensure highly efficient crushing while generating only minimal fines. Polyurethane-lined vibration conveyors transport the material through the patented sorting system.
First, an air sorter gently removes fine particles. The fines are further classified by polyurethane-lined vibration screens before reusable silicon is returned to the desired size fraction. The main material stream passes through a camera-controlled optical sorter that removes oversized particles and produces a precise target particle size for reliable crucible charging.
From Recycling to Crystal Growth
The sorted silicon is stored in polyurethane-lined boxes, providing buffer capacity for up to three days and ensuring continuous production. Covered storage boxes allow installation outside cleanroom environments. An integrated material tracking system automatically delivers the required silicon batches at exactly the right time.
For crystal growth, polyurethane-lined buffer conveyors separate different silicon resistivities. Automated dosing systems add dopants according to individual recipes before robots fill internal feeder tubes or external feeder hoppers. Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) transport the filled feeders directly to the single crystal pullers, creating a fully automated material flow from recycling to crystal growth.
